Russell Molony (North Entrance, NSW) Survives Tough Day For TravelSIM Team Australia In Panama

Russell Molony (North Entrance, NSW) was the last man standing for TravelSIM Team Australia after a difficult Day 4 at the Reef ISA World Surfing Games in Panama.

The event on the right-hand, reef break at Santa Catalina has attracted more than 150 leading surfers from 24 countries. TravelSIM Team Australia is the defending champion after winning the title in 2011.

Molony, along with Wade Carmichael (Avoca, NSW) and Tim Macdonald (North Stradbroke, QLD) were facing elimination in the repechage rounds but the tiny swell made it difficult to post significant scores.

If a surfer is knocked out of the main draw for finishing third or fourth they still get a chance to qualify for the final through the repechage rounds but must finish first or second in each heat to continue to advance.

Molony finished first and second with scores of 11.40 and 10.46 in his two repechage rounds to stay in contention. Carmichael and Macdonald both started the day strongly winning their first repechage round with scores of 7.60 and 14.33 but were knocked out in the next round as the swell dropped.

Macdonald finished third with 7.90 just failing in the final minutes to find the 4.55 needed for victory, while Carmichael was fourth with 6.02. Needing a 5.70 to win, Carmichael tried to snatch victory in the final minute scoring an 8.90 ride, but an interference call relegated him to fourth.

TravelSIM Team Australia still has Thomas Woods (Burleigh Heads, QLD) in the main draw of the men’s event and Codie Klein (Kingscliff, NSW) and Dimity Stoyle (Sunshine Coast, QLD) are still in the main draw of the women’s event.
