MR Excited By Talent On Show At HPC National Training Camp

The future of Australian surfing is in safe hands according to four-time World Champion Mark Richards after hosting a group of young surfers for a training camp at the Hurley Surfing Australia High Performance Centre (HPC).

The 2013 Mark Richards and Layne Beachley Under 16 National Training Camps were recently conducted at the HPC at Casuarina and attracted 26 of Australia’s best male and female junior surfers.

The camps were aimed at developing the young surfers and giving them guidance and instruction as they look to transition into becoming a professional athlete. The camps included daily surf sessions, video analysis and heat strategy discussions, and nutritional and training advice with Australia’s best coaches including Surfing Australia National Coaching Director Martin Dunn, Surfing Australia Sport Science Manager Dr Jeremy Sheppard, HPC Head Coach Gary Cruickshank and a host of top State surfing coaches.

“When you surf around this country you see we have so many incredible beaches and so many great young surfers, and things like these camps will just nurture that talent,” Richards said.

“The great thing about these camps is that someone with great surfing ability can be taught about exercise, diet, nutrition, how to do an aerial, how to land an aerial, how not to injury themselves and contest preparation... there is just so much they can get out of it.

“Even at my stage as a retired pro surfer from a long time ago, I find it fascinating what the kids are being taught and I learn stuff when I come to these camps.”

Although a winner of four World Titles, Richards said a lack of fitness was always a problem during his professional career and believed the advice the surfers received at the HPC was crucial.

“One of the most important things the kids actually get out of this camp is that fitness is everything in surfing. Gymnastics is now such a big part with the aerial approach everyone has and to be able to surf like that you need to be fit.

“You have to be fit not to end up with a messed up body in later life, and you have to know about the importance of exercise, diet and fitness, which is what they getting taught here... it’s an incredible program.

“I’m just impressed how well everyone surfs at a young age and how manoeuvres which once were only really capable of been done by elite surfers are basically now been done by teenage kids. Where we go in the future is unimaginable if any of these kids end up on the ASP Tour in five to 10 years or so.”

An award for Most Promising Surfer was presented following each camp. Holly Wawn from Newport, Sydney, won the award at the Layne Beachley Camp, while Monty Tait, from Maroubra, won the award at the Mark Richards Camp. Both surfers received a trophy plus a DHD surfboard.
