Kai Hing Scores A 10 In A Mixed Day For TravelSIM Team Australia At ISA World Juniors

There were mixed results for TravelSIM Team Australia on Day 4 at the Dakine ISA World Junior Surfing Championship in Nicaragua.

The event at the beachbreak of Playa Jiquiliste in Tola has attracted more than 300 of the world’s best Under 18 surfers from more than 30 countries.

Eight of the 12 TravelSIM Team Australia surfers are still in the main draw, with three forced to advance through repechage, while Matt King (Ulladulla, NSW) was eliminated from the Under 18 boys’ division.

In clean 2-4ft (1-1.5m) surf, Luke Hynd (Tallebudgera, QLD – 9.50) and Soli Bailey (Suffolk Park, NSW – 9.10) finished first and second in their Under 18 boys' heat to advance to Round 4 of the main draw. Eli Steele (Moffatt Beach, QLD ) stumbled early finishing third in his heat of the main draw with 10.87.  But he bounced back in the afternoon to win his first repechage heat with 14.54.

If a surfer is knocked out of the main draw for finishing third or fourth they still get a chance to qualify for the final through the repechage rounds but must finish first or second in each heat to continue to advance. Steele has six repechage heats to finish first or second to survive.

King also finished third in his main draw heat with 8.80 and was then eliminated in the afternoon after finishing fourth in his first repechage heat with 6.89.

In the Under 16 boys, Jacob Wilcox (Margaret River, WA – 12.33) and Kai Hing (Wurtulla, QLD – 12.30) won their heats to advance to Round 4 of the main draw, while Chris Zaffis (Angourie, NSW – 7.32) also advanced with a second. Hing was a standout scoring a 10 late in his heat after earlier registering an interference call.

Quinn Bruce (Coolangatta, QLD – 11.67) won his second repechage heat in the Under 16 boys to stay in contention to requalify for the main draw. He has another seven repechage heats to survive.

In the Under 18 girls, Kirsten Ogden (Suffolk Park, NSW – 12.94) won her heat and Stephanie Single (Lennox Head, NSW – 13.00) was second with both advancing to Round 4 of the main draw. They will meet each other in the next round, with Chelsea Tuach from Barbados making up the three-person heat.

Holly Wawn (Newport, NSW – 10.00) won her heat in the main draw of the Under 16 girls, while Isabella Nichols (Coolum Beach, QLD – 8.20) was relegated to the repechage rounds after finishing third in her heat of the main draw. She has to survive five repechage heats to reach the final.
