TravelSIM Team Australia Sitting Second At ISA World Juniors

TravelSIM Team Australia sits in second spot with two days remaining at the Dakine ISA World Junior Surfing Championship in Nicaragua.

The event at the beachbreak of Playa Jiquiliste in Tola has attracted more than 300 of the world’s best Under 18 surfers from more than 30 countries.

Hawaii leads the teams’ event ahead of Australia with the USA in third.

TravelSIM Team Australia has four surfers still in the main draw, with another five attempting to qualify for the final through the repechage rounds. Two more surfers, Eli Steele (Moffatt Beach, QLD) and Quinn Bruce (Coolangatta, QLD), were eliminated on Day 6.

Jacob Wilcox (Margaret River, WA – 12.84) is one of the form surfers heading into the final two days after his third successive win in the Under 16 boys. He is the only Australian surfer remaining in the main draw after Chris Zaffis (Angourie, NSW – 12-70) slipped to the repechage rounds with a fourth in one of the highest scoring heats of the day.

If a surfer is knocked out of the main draw for finishing third or fourth they still get a chance to qualify for the final through the repechage rounds but must finish first or second in each heat to continue to advance.

Zaffis will join Kai Hing (Wurtulla, QLD) after King survived two repechage heats with two seconds with scores of 12.16 and 12.73. Bruce earlier opened his day winning his first repechage heat with 12.86 but was eliminated after finishing third in his next heat with a 10.00.

In the Under 18 boys, Soli Bailey (Suffolk Park, NSW - 11.66) with a second and Luke Hynd (Tallebudgera Valley, QLD – 14.00) with a first, advanced to the final round of the main draw before the final. They will meet each other in the next four-man heat and if both can finish first and second they will advance to the final.

Steele finished second in his opening repechage heat with a 13.60 but finished third in his next heat with 6.17 to be knocked out of the event.

Kirsten Ogden (Suffolk Park, NSW) remains undefeated in the Under 18 girls after winning her heat with a 13.44. If she finishes first or second in her next heat she will contest the final, but if not can still qualify through the repechage rounds.

Stephanie Single (Lennox Head, NSW) finished third in her main draw heat with a 10.66 and now has three repechage heats to survive to reach the final.

In the Under 16 girls, Holly Wawn (Newport, NSW – 8.10) will attempt to reach the final through repechage after finishing third in her main draw heat. Isabella Nichols (Coolum Beach, QLD – 11.74) won her repechage heat and will meet Wawn in the next round with both needing to finish first or second to stay in contention.
