Rip Curl Gromsearch Presented By Posca Kicks Off At North Cronulla

The 2013 Rip Curl GromSearch presented by POSCA national surfing series kicked off today in one-to-two foot waves at North Cronulla.

The Under-16 Boys made light work of the tricky conditions attacking the peaks with a combination of style and flair.

Kalani Ball set the standard early, locking in an 8.67 (out of a possible ten) in the first heat of the day. The talented Stanwell Park natural footer threw down a variety of innovative and technical manoeuvres to net himself the score and the heat win.

“I’m pretty happy to have got a win under my belt and lock in a decent score especially considering the waves were pretty tough” said Ball. “I’ve been doing the GromSearch since I was about 12 years old and every year the standard of surfing continues to rise.”

Angourie’s Chris Zaffis also made his mark on the Under-16 Boys netting himself an 8.33 and a win in his opening heat. Zaffis impressed the judges with his textbook carves and frontside cracks.

Luke Gyory and Bill Harrison caused the biggest upset of the Under-16 Boys, successfully knocking 2013 NSW State Junior Champion, Monty Tait down into third spot. Both Gyory and Harrison locked in respectable scores to edge Tait into third spot. Gyory claimed the win, while Harrison took second spot.

Jackson Giles closed out the division in an impressive fashion locking in a 9.00 ride. The Maroubra surfer smashed out three giant forehand manoeuvres to lock in the highest single wave score of the division.

“I was pretty pumped to get that score,” said Giles. “There weren’t many waves out there, so I was a little bit lost when I was paddling out. I knew I just wanted to get a bomb straight away and then take it from there. I’ve never gone too well in GromSearch events in the past, so I’d definitely like to lock in a good result here this year. I think Jackson Baker and Kalani Ball will be the two to watch as we move into the higher rounds. Both those guys have been really impressive.”

Other Under-16 Boys heat winners included Jared Hickle, Jackson Baker, Taylor Hutchison, Jeames Young, Kipp Caddy, Dylan Rodgers, Sunny Linden and Joe Van Dijk.

Laura Poncini notched up the highest heat scores of the Under-16 Girls, locking in an impressive 9.67. The Sunshine Coast surfer effortlessly linked together a chain of technical turns and hooks to lock in the score.

Surfing NSW Head Judge Phil Courtney said: “The surfing we saw from Laura Poncini was incredible to watch. She had a perfect combination of speed, power and flow managed to link it together effortlessly. It was definitely one of the biggest highlights of the event so far.”

Laura was awarded the POSCA Wave Of The Day for her aforementioned wave. For her efforts, Laura won an assortment of POSCA pens.

On land, participants drew on a designated POSCA colouring wall and also customised their own Rip Curl caps.
