Rip Curl GromSearch Presented by POSCA kicks off in windy conditions at Torquay Point

The Rip Curl GromSearch Presented by POSCA has kicked off at the protected corner of Torquay Point on the Surf Coast in windy conditions with a large swell affecting the whole coast.

16 & Under Cronulla grom, Jared Hickel was one of the standouts in the challenging surf placing ahead of local boys Tully Wylie (Jan Juc) and Bronson Field (Barwon Heads).

"At the end I got some really fun ones but it took me about 10mins to get any decent ones. I was doing a lot of duck diving out the back so i moved into the shorey and got some fun ones," said Hickel.

"I just want to go around and win one of the Rip Curl GromSearch events so I can make it into the National Final and get a chance to surf at Bells. That would be sick."

Hickel scored a heat total of 10.23 (out of a possible 20) to Wylie’s 7.34 and Field's 3.63.

Zoe Clarke (Jan Juc, VIC) dominated her Round 1 heat in the 16 & Under Girls finding some clean faces amongst the increasing winds.

"The waves were fun when you could find them. It was just really tricky to be in the right spot. It would be awesome to win the whole event on my home beach.

"Having Adam Robertson as my coach has helped a heap in finding the right waves and sitting in the correct take off zone."

In the 12 & Under Boys, Keanu Miller (Bulli, NSW) was unstoppable posting one of the highest wave scores of the day, a 7.50 for a series of strong carves and turns. Miller took down James Hughes (Jan Juc, VIC), Bohdi Williams (Ocean Grove, VIC) and Tane Dobbyn (Palm Beach, QLD).

Jared Hickel was awarded the POSCA Wave of the Day for his combination of carves and re-entries on an inside left at the end of the heat, which earnt him a 5.83 and gave him the heat win.

Contest Director, Max Wells, was impressed at the level of surfing on show.

"I have been doing this event for over 10 years and this year is by far stacked with the most talent,” he said.

"The whole event is a great benchmark for all the junior kids in the state and sets the bar that Victorian juniors need to aim for. I’m looking forward to the coming days as the weather and surf improves."

Groms on the beach got the chance to go crazy on the POSCA Colouring Wall and customised their own Rip Curl hats with the POSCA Pens.

The 2013 Rip Curl GromSearch Series is presented by POSCA (Mitsubishi Pencil Australia) with managing partner Surfing Australia and associate partners FireWire Surfboards, Shapers FIns and ASL Magazine.

Forecasts are calling for a slight drop in swell with the wind swinging offshore for the remaining of the event.
