RIP CURL GROMSEARCH CROWNS SOUTH AUSTRALIAN CHAMPIONS.

RIP CURL GROMSEARCH CROWNS SOUTH AUSTRALIAN CHAMPIONS.
The Rip Curl GromSearch, presented by POSCA, ran at Middleton Point today with strong winds and larger swell providing very challenging conditions for the Nation’s best juniors.
It was a mixed bag of results for the South Australians as they made a charge in all finals, but were eventually overcome by the large Interstate contingent as they battled it out for the individual titles in the premier Junior (16 and under) series in the country.
Local talent used their knowledge of the tricky conditions to secure a place in each final over all six age divisions, and were well fancied in the premier 16 and under (16’s) division with Tayla Hannak (Port Elliot), Ellie Francis (Middleton) and Kyle Imgraben (Pt. Noarlunga) making strong starts to their respective finals. With the added bonus of a spot in the GromSearch National final, held in Queensland in December, on the line hopes were high for home grown winner.
Queenslander Laura Poncini (Sunshine Coast) turned it on in the 16’s girls, continuing her recent run of impressive results by narrowly taking the win in front of Francis (2nd) and Hannak (3rd) to consolidate herself as the best performed surfer in the GromSearch series this year.
Imgraben was impressive all day and secured the POSCA ‘Wave of the Day’ for a long, high scoring wave in the final.
But it wasn’t enough to keep out Victorians Joe Van Dijk (Phillip Island) and Cody Robinson (Torquay), who placed 1st and second respectively, by the end of the final in the 16 boys.
The theme continued in the 14’s when local Harrison Coulter was moved into 3rd place by the impressive performances of Tully Wylie (Torquay) and Samson Coulter (Queenscliff, NSW).
The wind continued and the tricky conditions levelled the local advantage that Sophie Fulton might have had, allowing Kiara Meredith (Shell Harbour, NSW) and Bodhi Leigh-Jones (Avalon, NSW) to take the top spots in the girls 14’s.
Leigh-Jones continued her good form in the 12’s girls to claim the title and was joined by younger sister Cedar at the top of the division. The effort was enough to secure her the 'Firewire Performance Award' of the whole event for her outstanding effort across two divisions.
South Australians Harry Green and Sophia Fulton won the 'Shapers Fins / Surfing Life Rising Star Award' for the best up and coming talent at the event.
