Name: Simon Hayward
Occupation: Event Producer/Manager
Age: 41

CW: What part of the coast do you call home?

SH: I call Avalon on the Northern Beaches of Sydney home, I was raised in South Taranaki and Wanganui, New Zealand.

Tell us a bit about the surf around there.

When it’s on, it’s on! We have beachies, reefs, a couple of points and pretty much a dream set up here on the peninsula. If you have access to a boat or ski, there are also a couple of epic set ups a short trip away. Mid-week uncrowded sessions are the ones!

How long have you been surfing?

Since I was 8 or 9, learnt to stand up on an 11’6" that Dad used to drag down the sand to the Patea rivermouth for me. Taranaki is a province and also a Mountain, I learnt to ride the snow on Mt Taranaki. I’ve been lucky enough to surf in the morning and ski in the arvo a couple of times.

What was your last session like?

My last session was at Bungan, nice head high Nor’east A-frames with only a mate and two others out. The previous session was an unforgettable couple of surfs I had the day I took these photos. I’ve just returned from a trip home to NZ with my wife and 3 kids and I managed to get a day up the coast with my brother and good mate, we’ve surfed together for over 20 years and we absolutely scored this day. Solid, long period swell, offshores and no-one around, I think we clocked up around 7 hours in the water and all jagged some big, doubled-up bombs. We surfed a couple of spots that day and they were lining up really nicely! So stoked I took some shots to remember it, I shot some great video of my bro too!

Where else has your surfing taken you?

I’ve surfed all over Australia and NZ, and had a few trips to Indo, Samoa and Fiji. Some of the crew and I are off to Simuelue Island off North Sumatra later in the year, hopefully we score!

Best swell you’ve ever seen/ridden?

I was lucky enough to have some time away from work for a few months last year and believe it or not, the best swells and waves I’ve seen and ridden were at Palm Beach, just a 5 minute drive from my place. A handful of locals and I bagged 6 weeks of epic back to back swells and the banks at Palmy were unbelievable. I saw some of the deepest barrels and glassiest, perfect conditions of my life. The boys I surfed it with get misty eyed whenever we yarn about that few weeks in the water.

Dream destination?

Hawaii, have always dreamt about going there since I was a young fella….hopefully later this year or next year?

When did you first pick up a camera?

My grandfather was a professional photographer and I use to hang in his darkroom watching the magic happen, Dad is a great photographer and so is my wife. I never had the need to shoot photos as there was always someone close to me capturing the moments that deserved it. I did however start snapping around 10 years ago and since then had been an avid photog, I’ve been lucky to be around some pretty inspiring stuff and have shot some cool shit over the last decade, my favourite things to shoot are my kids and waves although working in the event/entertainment game, I’ve been fortunate to capture some amazing moments in time.

When did you sign up as a Coastalwatch Plus member?

Pretty much when Coastalwatch went plus! I’m a weather nut and also a full grown frother, I check the conditions and forecasts at least 3 times a day and am always keen for a paddle. I really enjoy checking on the site everyday.

What features have you found helpful?

Cams, Wams and Bams, no seriously, the articles are great, forecasts are pretty spot on although as a man grommet, I’m pretty bummed when the forecast epic ground swell turns out to be 2 foot slop… Mother nature determines what's going on in the ocean and sometimes the best way to know, is to just go to the beach and check it out. I really enjoy the variety of great articles and Wave of The Week is also a winner. Congrats to Mick on his 3rd world title, if ever a man deserved it, it's Mick - he f*%king charges! Nice one bro and cheers Coastalwatch Plus!

For sharing his story & images with us we sent Simon a Surfing 2013 1oz Silver Proof $1 coin thanks to the Perth Mint as part of the Land Down Under Series
