Phillip Island, VIC/AUS (Monday, 17 February 2014): Joel Wookey (St Andrews Beach) and local girl Courtney Dunlop have taken out the Phillip Island Round of the Victorian Junior Titles Supported by Be the Influence.

In pumping 4ft waves on Saturday, the final heats of the postponed East Coast Round were run with Tully Wylie (Jan Juc), Jemima Hutchins (Barwon Heads) and Jacob Connelly (Melbourne) taking out their respective divisions.

Following the completion of the East Coast Round, the Phillip Island Round was run utilising the excellent conditions before the weather change over night.

The Under 18 Boys saw Joel Wookey rampage through the draw winning every heat throughout the weekend.

Wookey relished in the rippy waves similar to his home break on the Mornington Peninsula.

Placing in second was Taj McEntee (Inverloch) who placed third in the East Coast round and has made a solid push up the over ratings.

Will Dickson (Barwon Heads) and Jake Wootton (Jan Juc) placed in third and fourth respectively.

Courtney Dunlop took her first State Round win today at her home break of Woolamai. In the trying conditions Dunlop was able to find a 7.67 in the final minutes to leapfrog the field from 3rd to 1st.

Finishing in second was May Fox (Jan Juc), with Jemima Hutchins and Ella Sweeney (Jan Juc) in third and fourth.

The win places Dunlop and Hutchins on equal rating points both with a first and third placing.  With the final event coming up at Jan Juc later next month, both girls will be facing off for the title of Victorian Junior Champion.

The Under 16’s Divisions saw Jan Juc pair; Tully Wylie and Grace day take out their divisions with commanding performances.

Wylie was in form on his backhand in the long right hand waves and after a slow start to the final was able to find two strong scoring rides to over take Gully Steelhead (Rye). Max Lazarus (Pt Lonsdale) and Henry Hutchins (Barwon Heads) placed in third and fourth.

Grace Day never looked like giving up the top spot after scoring a 6.67 in the opening minutes and then quickly backing it up with a 4.83 to take the lead in the Under 16 Girls.

Sophie Fletcher (Phillip Island) India Robinson (Jan Juc) and Isabell Cook (Torquay) took out the minor placings in the final.

The Under 14’s gave the crowd a glimpse into the promising future for surfing in Victoria, with an exciting final including Xavier Huxtable (Jan Juc), Tane Bowden (Jan Juc), Codie Jeffery (Phillip Island) and Cole Fox (Jan Juc).

In the end Huxtable was able to find the best waves and come out on top of Bowden with Jeffery and Fox in third and fourth.

Piper Harrison (Mt Eliza) continued her dominance of the Under 14 Girls division taking out Bella Wilson (Jan Juc), Daisy Corbett (Phillip island) and Jessie Van Niekerk (Jan Juc).

The Victorian Junior Titles is supported by Be the Influence – Tackling Binge Drinking, Play it Safe by the Water, TeamUp, Coastalwatch PLUS, SevenT Surf and Surfing Victoria.
