Two-time ASP world champion Tom Carroll is pumped to compete in the Michilis SurfAid Cup at Dixon Park, Newcastle, this Friday 21 February as part of Surfest.

“I can’t wait to pull the team together and I feel honoured just to come together for SurfAid, it’s such a great cause,” Carroll said.

“Each time in the SurfAid Cup it’s amazing how good a feeling it is, it’s uplifting.  There’s warmth about the mission, and on top of that the competitive edge thing pops out,” Carroll said. “You don’t get that in any other event and that’s what makes the SurfAid Cups special.

“Plus I’m looking forward to mixing it up with the local surfers as there’s a lot of raw, natural talent coming out of Newcastle.”

Along with Carroll, local Newcastle legends Matt Hoy and Luke Egan will be competing as well as Simon Anderson, Tom Whitaker and Ryan “Whippet” Clark, plus local surfers Craig Anderson, Drew Courtney, Glen “Micro” Hall, Ryan Callinan, Justin Lee, Jake Sylvester, Travis Lynch and Jesse Adam, and USA’s Ryan Ragan.

The pros will join the 16 fundraising teams who are aiming to raise $80,000 for humanitarian organisation SurfAid in the charity tag-team surfing event at Dixon Park, next to the main Surfest site at Merewether.

Mark and Tom Michilis, directors of Michilis Pty Limited, said they were proud to sponsor this year’s SurfAid Cup Newcastle. Michilis is a local, Australian-owned company that is celebrating 50 years in the construction industry this year.

“We competed in last year’s SurfAid Cup and as Managing Directors of Michilis we are proud to sponsor this year’s event,” Mark and Tom said. “We are extremely stoked to support SurfAid in this capacity.”

The 16 competing teams are: Cerretti Developments, Orica, Shaw Gidley, Lawler, Mullane, Council Boardriders, SSS, Custom Web Cruisers, Coffey with Friends, Bilbie Dan Solicitors, Beilby Consulting, Sanbah Surf, Michilis, Accountants Stockbrokers Planners, Pipelining and nibhealthfunds.

With Michilis as naming rights sponsor, supporting sponsors for the Michilis SurfAid Cup are:  Surfest, Hunter Business Boardriders, Beach Hotel Merewether, Subway, Jirsch Sutherland, Coastalwatch and Surfing World.

The Michilis SurfAid Cup will run from 9am - 5pm at Dixon Park on Friday 21 February.
