Bede's Grom Shootout Goes Off!

Isn't grom-stoke just the best stuff ever?

If you're ever feeling bummed about surfing, y'know – crowds, attitudes, your forehand cutback just really not what you wished  – just watch a bunch of groms get out there and have a hell time at events like Bede Durbidge's Fox Grom Shoutout. The event took place last weekend at Bede's home of North Stradbroke Island for the second year running after a succesful 2013, and by the looks of the vid above, was an awesome success. Congrats to Bede and the crew at Fox.

Full Press Release Below:

This was the scene for the second annual Fox Grom Shootout presented by Bede Durbidge at North Stradbroke Island. After an incredibly successful 2013 event, word spread far and wide, with over 120 competitors making the trek overseas to the wave rich and sun drenched island. A solid East swell was on hand, which saw a shift from the intended event location Main Beach around the corner to epic right point of Deadman’s Beach, the leg burning top section of the Cylinders Beach.

Both days saw overhead waves and a handy reverse current, meaning the rides were long and time spent paddling back out was at the bare minimum, lending itself to some amazing junior surfing.

A refreshing round robin format was employed to share the stoke, with each competitor surfing twice, but not directly against their opponents in the water. Each grom’s two wave total from both heats was combined, meaning hassling was not prevalent and performance levels were at a maximum.

Once the dust of the opening rounds had settled, the top eight performers from each division moved into the semifinals, where the format returned to the classic four man battle.

The standard of the senior U/16 divisions was again incredible with Dexter Muskens (Coolangatta) backside blasting his way to the win in the boys. Another goofy footer, Alyssa Lock (Tweed Heads) surfed well beyond her age and claimed the U/16 girls.

The true highlight divisions of the event are the U/8 Boys and the U/10 Girls. Judges and score sheets are thrown out the window, leaving the mini kids to surf for the love of it. The bath warm water and gentle inside reforms provided the perfect platform for all kids to have a blast, and a blast they had!

All 30 of the tiny competitors received a medallion, regardless of whether they rode foamies prone or locked in 100 meter rides from the outside of the point (which one 5 year old girl did with ease), it was all about sharing the love of the sport.

From there, the U/14 Boys resumed competition, throwing hammers that belonged at a Pro Junior level. Event standout Jaggar Bartholemew (Coolangatta) went down in a tight tussle to incredibly crisp Mikey McDonagh (Lennox Head).

The U/14 Girls shone in the afternoon conditions, with Sacha Baker (Mudjimba) taking the cake.

Lennox Chell dominated the U/12 Boys division, ranking first after the round robin before winning both his Semi Final and then the overall Final.

The event maintained its unsurpassed community vibe, with Bede’s beloved Point Lookout Boardriders Club again the backbone of the event, with club members running everything from the BBQ to tallying score sheets.

Bede assembled a huge range of prize packs for the event, with Fox buffing every participant and House of Marley, Mt Woodgee Surfboards, Fiik Skateboards and OAM sending home finalists with car loads of goodies.

After a huge two days of surfing, it is clear that Bede’s Fox Grom Shootout at North Stradbroke Island is here to stay and preparations are already being made for a bigger and better event in 2015.
