2 Apr 2014 0 Share

An earthquake with a magnitude of 8.2 off the coast of Chile has set off tsunami warnings for Chile, Ecuador and Peru with waves of 1.8 metres having already struck the coast of Chile.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center have also stated a tsunami watch is in effect for Colombia, Panama, Costa Rica, Nicaragua and El Salvador.

According to the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center the earthquake took place just before midnight near the coast of Northern Chile and that sea level readings indicate a tsunami was generated that “may have been destructive along coasts near the earthquake epicenter and could also be a threat to more distant coasts.”

American news-service abcnews.com have reported that evacuation orders were issued for the Chilean cities of Arica, Iquiqu and Antofagasta.

As yet there are no reports of victims or serious damage to any of the cities affected by the earthquake or tsunami.

The Australian Bureau of Meteorology has stated that there is no tsunami threat for Australian mainland, islands or territories.
