An earthquake with a magnitude of 7.5 has struck today near the town of Rabaul in the northeast of Papua New Guinea at 9.49am AEST, triggering tsunami warnings for Papua New Guinea and The Solomon Islands.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center in Hawaii has said "hazardous tsunami waves are possible for coasts located within 1,000 km of the earthquake epicentre along the coasts of Papua New Guinea and the Solomon Islands".

It also states that "tsunami waves reaching 1 to 3 meters above the tide level are possible along some coasts of Papua New Guinea".

To put this earthquake in context, the devastating tsunami that swept through the Mentawai Islands in October 2010 was the result of a magnitude 7.7 earthquake, and created a three metre tsunami.

There are no reports of injuries in the town of Rabaul, or neighbouring areas as yet.

The Australian Bureau of Meteorology has stated that there is no tsunami threat for Australian mainland, islands or territories.
