The Banaam Indigenous Surf Titles are being held this weekend at Fingal Head in northern NSW. The 3-day event is running between Friday 11th and Sunday 13th September and comprises of five divisions including; open men's, men's masters, junior men's, longboard and women. Event organizers are also stoked to include a kids mini comp for 12 of their surf groms who complete a surf lesson with the ‘in2surf’ surf school over our the weekend.

“The significant indigenous surfing History in Fingal has set a platform for us which encompasses our cultural values, as surfing has been and continues to be a strong part of our identity as salt water people.” Says event organiser Joel.

“Our catch phrase is "SEE YA OUT THERE!" Sending out the invitation for our mob to get out there, enjoy being on country and getting restored and refreshed in the healing water.”

There has always been a high level to Indigenous surfing and it’s just getting better and better. The young surfers are keeping up with mainstream surfing.

Prominent Indigenous surfer Otis Carey has said, the event will bring to the forefront a number of the upcoming young Koorie surfers as a direct result of a Coffs Harbour community program Ready Mob. “The program (that Otis has been involved with) is providing surf coaching and lifestyle support to give kids something to look forward to on the weekends and really having a positive impact on grass roots Indigenous surfing.” Carey said.

Joel says that Otis Carey is in fact one to watch in the Opens. “He has won previous Indigenous Surf Title's at Newcastle's Wandjali contests and is a very classy, stylish surfer.” He said. But both Carey and Joel say “The Molony brothers, Russ and Matt are a force to be reckoned with out in the waves as well. Russ has won consecutive titles at the Indigenous Surfing Titles at Bells beach and has also done very well mainstream surfing contests. Summer Simon, an up and coming surfer girl recently won both Wandjali and the Indigenous Surfing Titles at Bells earlier this year, definitely one to look out for.”

“I’m really looking forward to competing at Fingal this weekend it will be great to hang out and share some stories and laughs with everyone. The comp will be out at Fingal Point and I’ve heard there are some good banks so it should be pretty fun.” Said Carey.

With continual support Indigenous surfing events such as ours this can continue to grow and in turn “promote healthy living and tackle many of the issue that we are faced with today in our communities, such as drug and alcohol, suicide increase in our youth & mental illness.” Says Joel.

You can catch the Banaam Indigenous Titles and the Indigenous Markets on at Fingal Heads in the NSW Northern Rivers this Friday -Sunday.
