On Wednesday night an 8.3 magnitude earthquake rumbled the central coast of Chile and has put the capital, parts of the Chilean coast on hot Tsunami alert. The powerful quake caused significant damage to the city and it has been confirmed that 5 people have died as a result.

As the news has been filtering out to the world the Chilean President Michelle Bachelet has released a statement saying one million residents have been evacuated from their homes in an effort to prevent a potential catastrophe.

The US Geological Survey (USGS) said the tremor struck off the coast of Coquimbo, 46km (29 miles) west of the city of Illapel at 19:54 local time (22:54 GMT).

It is expected that waves up to a possible 3-metres could make their way to the coast of French Polynesia, the Pacific Tsunami Centre (PTWC) in Hawaii has said.

An alert has also been issued to Japan, Antarctica and the South Pacific, including New Zealand, Fiji, Tonga, Vanuatu and the Solomon Islands with a possible 0.3 to 1 metre wave increase.

Coastalwatch Chief Forecaster said "It’s well known fact that tsunamis can travel vast distances of open ocean in relatively short time-frames to produce widespread inundation and destruction thousands of miles away from its origin. Indeed if it wasn’t for the blocking effect of New Zealand we’d probably be scanning the horizon for a few freak sets originating from the Chilean quake."
