The Newest World Surfing Reserve Has Been Named

Today Queensland's Burleigh to Snapper Rocks joins Manly Beach on the World Surfing Reserves list of recognition. 

The announcement came from the House of Commons, London, UK, during the four day Global Wave Conference attended by leading International surf & environmental academic’s including former three times World Champion Tom Curren.

Three locations were up for the in the running for this top post including two Queensland icons, the Gold Coast, Noosa and Guarda Do Embaú in Brazil. The World Surfing Reserves list is backed by the Californian 'Save the Waves Coalition' started in 2008. It aims to protect global surf habitats by providing international recognition and support for wave and coastal protection.

Andrew McKinnon, Chairman of Gold Coast World Surfing Reserve said today "It has taken almost two years to process our nomination for a World Surfing Reserve from Burleigh Point to Snapper Rocks approx. 16 kilometres. This has taken much persistence, perseverance and patience, but we never lost faith and by engaging in the positive message, we have achieved this incredible goal."

Surfing Queensland President, John Charlton is delighted by the decision and said today, "A lot of work has been put into getting this accomplished from the committee and in particular, the chairman Andrew McKinnon. The sand bottom points break of Burleigh, Kirra, Greenmount, Rainbow Bay and Snapper Rocks have for a long time been regarded the finest of their type in the world and now they have been acknowledged by the Save the Waves coalition and the World Vision Council." *See Burleigh to Snapper video below

Existing reserves include;

  • Manly Beach, Australia
  • Punta de Lobos, Chile
  • Bahia Todos Santos, Mexico
  • Huanchaco, Brazil
  • Santa Cruz, California, USA
  • Malibu, California, USA
  • Ericeira, Portugal

Criteria for selection includes;

  • Quality and consistency of waves
  • Environmental characteristics
  • Surf culture and history
  • Local support

"The local support has been incredible and we are really grateful to the community for their efforts in supporting the bid," Said Gold Coast World Surfing Reserve chairman, Andrew McKinnon.

The Gold Coast Waterways Authority, Surf Lifesaving Queensland, Surfing Queensland, environment groups Gecko, Save the Whales Coalition and Surfrider Foundation, academics and community organisations, local boardrider groups and diving and fishing associations have all been part of the support for the achievement of this great result.
