Rusty Cave Rock Classic - WQS

29 Jun 2005 0 Share

World Championship Tour surfers Melanie Redman-Carr (Aus) and Heather Clark (Port Shepstone) shone in rough surf at the Rusty Cave Rock Classic held on the Bluff near Durban today (Tuesday, 28 June 2005). The women’s quarterfinals took place in 2-metre storm surf with moderate south westerly winds making for testing conditions.

Redman-Carr controlled her quarterfinal clash scoring 12.5 out of a possible 20 points to earn the highest heat score of the day as well as the top single wave score of 7.5-points. Tammy Lee Smith (Salt Rock), who is fresh from a boat trip surfing in Indonesia, performed exceptionally to clinch a well deserved second place. Telana Flannagan (EL) and Lynne Mackey (Westville) bowed out in third and fourth respectively.

Clark, or “Fergie” as she is affectionately known in SA, almost mirrored her best friend’s results scoring a heat total of 12.25-points with a 7.0 being her highest scoring ride. A fierce battle ensued for second place which went to Sacha Moller (Bluff) ahead of her 2004 National Team mate Tasha Mentasti (Dbn North); there was less than 0.6-points separating them.

The most tightly contested heat of the day occurred when Michelle Hill (Cape St Francis) pipped Karina Petroni (USA) by 0.25-points with Sarah Johnston (Warner Beach) in third place separated by 0.9-points. Junior star Nikita Robb (EL) suffered a wave starved heat to finish fourth.

ASP Africa Champion Tamarys de Maroussem (Westbrook) trounced her quarterfinal opponents. American surfer Leilani Gryde and Jessica Matthews (Cape St Francis) were both in contention for second place, the results came down to the wire with Gryde defeating Matthews by a negligible 0.5-points. 17 year old Nicole Annells (Warner Beach) placed fourth.

The Men’s round of 64 surfers will be held at 07h00 on Wednesday (June 29) morning.
