Virtual Reality, What it Means for the Future of Surf Film Making

COASTALWATCH | 360fly

We've been featuring the revolutionary 360fly virtual reality camera with our Wave of the Week over the last couple of months.

Being a new technology, it's a bit daunting and hard to understand at first but once you've nutted out the basics it can take you into a whole new world of action sports video and provide your friends and family with an experience like no other.

We took the camera itself and an iPhone to the crowds on the beach at the Quiksilver Pro on the weekend to introduce some of them to virtual reality for the first time.

Here are some tips to help you get your head around the video system of the future so you too can live #lifeuncropped;

1 - Set-up: Connect your 360fly to your phone via wifi so you can edit and upload your videos straight away.

2 - Shooting: There's just one button for on, off, record and stop.

3 - Shooting Water: Capture your whole surfing or water experience without moving or worrying about the camera. Place the camera on your board using the sticky mount provided or a GoPro sticky mount and 360fly adapter

4 - Shooting 'Here & Now': The power of this camera is that you can place it down and capture an entire moment without having to move the camera around so you don't miss a thing. Connect the 360fly to a tripod or place on a flat surface to capture every angle of a special moment.

5 - Quality: The video quality of the camera is available in HD, with a 4k version available soon.

6 - Review & Editing: It's so easy. You don't have to wait until you get home to check out footage and share it online. Connect your 360fly to your phone to review, edit and upload straight to Facebook, Youtube or to export a file. You can also connect to the 360fly Director App on your PC or laptop for editing or conversion to use in Premier Pro / Final Cut Pro.

7 - Watching & Immersing Yourself: Control what aspect or angle you watch by moving your phone around or scrolling with your mouse. You can also get yourself a virtual reality headset that will literally put you in the video.
