The lead up to the Jbay Open primarily surrounded Mick Fanning's return to the lineup – the spot where one year ago he had a close encounter with a shark in the finals against Julian Wilson. Worldwide news zoned in on what safety precautions were being taken to ensure the 2016 event didn't suffer the same close-call. Australia's Clever Bouy system has been engaged and extra water safety patrol are patrolling the area to keep the surfers safe.

As the opening heats got underway, it was Fanning who appropriately took to the water first up. Despite suffering a pre-event ankle injury he cruised through on one of the longest waves of the day to take out the heat.

“It’s been a big week actually,” said Fanning. “I got here early but then hurt my ankle so had to sit on the sidelines and watch the amazing waves go through. The medical staff have worked wonders and I’ve got it taped up. I feel good when I’m up and riding and each day my ankle gets better and better. It’s great to get back out there.”

Fanning's 2015 finals opponent, Julian Wilson went to town earning two near-perfect 9-point-rides in his first round heat. The Queenslander looked strong through all his manoeuvres in one of his best heats of the year.

“It’s so nice out there today, there’s plenty of swell on the opening day and it’s incredible to be back,” said Wilson. "I’m just enjoying the waves here and it feels good to have a strong heat.”

Meanwhile after day two all is rolling through as expected. Hometown hero, Jordy Smith has just sent Kolohe Andino home, John John is through to round 4 as is Slater.

Watch live daily from 1pm in WA and 3pm on the east coast on the WSL website & app.
