Australian Surf Movie Festival

Tim Bonython’s annual festival of surf movies is about to hit the road to intro another great summer season on Australian beaches. The Samsung Australian Surf Movie Festival (ASMF)# 5 presented by Quiksilver kicks off proceedings on September 28 at Twin Towns in Coolongatta before going on to present 28 shows along the east coast.

This years ASMF 5 features FLOW by Josh Landan and Scott Stankey , one of the most revealing and compelling surfing stories ever told, offering a feature documentary delivered in a truly unique cinematic style. FLOW focuses on Channel Islands Surfboards founder and world-renowned surfboard craftsman Al Merrick. FLOW looks closely at his unique relationships with world champion Channel Islands Team riders, and arguably the two best and most influential surfers ever; Kelly Slater and Tom Curren.

Next up is FIRST CHAPTER, a film made by Jason Muir & co-directed by Dane Reynolds. FIRST CHAPTER shows off what futuristic surfing is all about. Dane Reynolds is a freak of nature, his surfing screams talent and cements him as one of the most exciting names in the modern era.

And one for the ladies, an edited down version of SHIMMER, seriously one the best chick surf flicks ever made. Directed by Jason Muir and Lowen Taylor.
Also on the card is a retrospective segment package of surfing footage shot this year by Tim Bonython & friends to cap of the evening, including footage from the biggest swell to hit the east coast in decades, shot last April, plus massive swells from Shipsterns in Tasmania and South Western WA.
Throw in NORTH BY NORTHWEST, a new short film by Jason Muir & Chris Bryan featuring epic desert barrels filmed this July/August with surfing by Ry Craike, Kerby Brown & crew.
To end the night with a bang, footage hot out of the edit room, AS GOOD AS IT GETS, in true Tim Bonython style all time and unbelievable Teahupo’o featuring Raimana, Dorian, Manoa, Poto, Mark Healy and Peter Mel.
