AUSTRALIANS DOMINATE FIRST EVENT OF THE YEAR

It's always great to jump start the surfing world tour in Australia and especially on the Gold Coast in front of epic crowds. Despite the rain, the 2017 Quiksilver and Roxy Pro was as exhilarating as ever. As the commentators said, "The story lines were exploding off the beach".

This was especially the case with the men's final between two best mates, defending Quik Pro champ Matt Wilkinson and injury wildcard Owen Wright.

The goofy-footed pair both under the super coach Glenn 'Micro' Hall paddled out off the rocks in the first final of the year which started slow and a battle of small scores. Conditions deteriorated during the heat but not enough to dim the energy and determination by the two who exchanged lead holders several times before Wright brought home the family name in a ridiculously emotional win.

The new world number one said after his win, "I'm so stoked to have won but couldn't have wanted to have anyone else in that final with me. Wilko's supported me the whole way through my injury and it was so good to have him here with me."

Stephanie Gilmore had a slow year in 2016 but dominated this year's Roxy Pro from the get-go. On finals day she let her home-town crowd know she's back and here for business slamming a perfect and astounding 10-point-ride in the semi-finals before moving through to the final against Lakey Peterson.

Gilmore said after her win "The colour yellow... I haven’t had it for a while, it’s gonna feel awesome. The world title, well it's just one event it’s so far from here, but like they say, the stats are pretty good from here, I’d love to win another title. This feels so good, I’m so happy."
