Last Thursday 25 May, the 2017 Surf Industry Awards were held in Sydney. Since 2011 the annual SBIA (Australian Surf and Boardsports Industry Association's) event brings together Australia's retailers, products and brands to celebrate achievement and progression. Entries to 31 categories open each January and voting is held conducted amongst manufacturers, retailers and an expert marketing panel.

This year it was a surfboard traction pad made from algae and the world's first neoprene-free wetsuit were among the winners. Former World Champs including Tom Carroll, Mark Occhilupo, and Joel Parkinson supported our own Doug Lees and Surfing World Magazine Editor Vaughan Blakey in hosting and presenting the awards.

Kelly Slater's Slater Designs Sci-Fi board and traction pad made from algae were winners of two categories and Patagonia was presented with the environmental award for the world first neoprene-free wetsuit line it brought in 2016.
