Bells Beach 50 Year Storm Event In Memory Of Shaun Brooks On ORANGE ALERT

50 YEAR STORM IN MEMORY OF SHAUN BROOKS | EVENT PARTNER

The Bells 50 Year Storm event in memory of Shaun Brooks has been placed on Orange Alert, signifying a standby period to watch as the swell develops through the Southern Ocean this week - as of 20 June 2017 by the event committee.

Event organisers say, "This swell has got more south in it than the last couple of swells. The angle that means it could be huge on Saturday and we'll monitor the situation over the next couple of days as it unfolds. This is the first of the major swells of the event window. We've had great six feet waves non-stop but this really is the first major one so we're monitoring it closely for a potential start on Saturday."

Coastalwatch Chief Forecaster Ben Macartney has said, "Latest model runs have pared the swell back a little, but it still looks big. Direction looks good, so it probably holds potential for solid 8 to 10ft Bells on Saturday, but the westward movement of the low below Tasmania could limit the potential for surf beyond the 10ft mark."

"By late this week we’re likely to be looking at another impressive, extra-large SW groundswell starting to boost wave-heights state-wide. The inception of this event commences with a polar low currently located far below Indonesia. This low is projected to rapidly intensify as it migrates below Indonesia on Tuesday, before extending an expanding belt of 30 to 40 knots WSW winds through our long-range swell window as migrates below Western Australia and the Bight on Wednesday and Thursday respectively.

However, it’s the addition of a second, intense polar front feeding into the western flank of this low on Thursday that’s projected to supercharge wave-growth. As these lows merge to form a larger, complex system below the mainland, an even stronger, 40 to 55kt WSW to SW fetch extends northeast, up below the Bight; going to work on the already energetic sea-state prevalent in the wake of the first low.

Going on latest WW3 runs, the compounding effect of this dual-storm progression on deepwater wave-growth is staggering; potentially culminating in maximum significant wave-heights of 40 to 50ft below Tasmania on Friday. For Victoria, this would translate into a phenomenal push in SW groundswell throughout Friday afternoon, leading in a peak in the 10ft plus range across exposed beaches on Saturday, with scope for 6 to 10ft sets marching into the Torquay reefs. Whether or not these projections hold true over the next few days is yet to be seen – either way, the probability of a large to extra-large SW groundswell is high."

The event that has a waiting period between June 1st - August 31st designed to give the best chance in capturing rare moments when winter storms from the deep Indian and southern oceans can come to life. If conditions reach 12 feet plus the contestable field of invitees comprising of Surf Coast locals and big wave chargers (including 18 surfers and 18 alternates) will suit up and paddle out.

Surfers will take to the Bells Beach lineup over a four-hour competition window to battle each other and mother nature in an effort to be the first champion of the event.

Every year the opening ceremony will kick off the waiting period, recognising the Wathaurong people as the traditional custodians of the land, and offering a chance for the wider Surf Coast community to connect over a shared love for the ocean and each other.

All proceeds for the Bells 50 Year Storm Invitational go to raising support for mental health advocate group One In Five.
