COASTALWATCH | EVENT FORECAST UPDATE

Here’s why JBay might be too much to handle tomorrow.

Yes, Jeffrey’s is superlatively pumping right now. And yesterday. And the day before. But tomorrow might go next level plus.

The accompanying chart will show you why: a huge ultra-powerful storm moving pretty much straight at the tip of Africa and intensifying as it does so. The storm means that 40-50-knot winds are aiming at the other side of the J-Bay coastal bend right now, from a good clear distance and tapering out 800 or so nautical miles. This is the biggest fetch of an already active year, it may even be the biggest this century, and it comes on the heels of a lot of prior wind, so its energies will better transfer to the ocean than might otherwise be the case.

Which means, well, bombs away. The angle may be enough to shade J-Bay from the full brunt of the swell but it’s gonna put anything so far this event in another kind of shade. What that means for the Corona Open, who knows. Finishing today will take a big effort for any surfer who came through the last two heats of round four, but it might just be the best option. After all, right now, it’s not exactly shit.
