Manly Residents Watch Great White In Beach Pool

COASTALWATCH | SHARK NEWS

A juvenile great white shark that washed up on Manly Beach this morning has been moved to the Fairy Bower pool on a stretcher, under the observation of Manly SeaLife Sanctuary staff.

The shark attracted a large crowd as it circled the pool. Marine staff continue to monitor the health of the shark.

The shark remains in Fairy Bower pool under observation and assessment until the best course of action has been devised.

Emily Best an Aquarist from Manly Sealife Sanctuary spoke to us about the shark's condition.

What is the update on the shark? "She [the shark] has been here in the Fairy Bower pool, for a couple of hours and we aren't sure of how long she will remain in here for. We would love to release her back into the ocean as soon as possible but it dependant on her health, strength and whether she will be able to swim when released, as assessed by our staff. We may have to keep her in the pool over night to make sure she's ok and release her out in the deep water tomorrow."

How old is the shark? "She is between 2-4 years old."

Can you move her back to the Aquarium? "We do have government permits to take her back to the Manly Sealife Sanctuary to maintain and monitor her health but the transfer itself could cause distress and we want to avoid that."

Great white sharks aren't commonly seen in the Manly area though? "No, they are a palaegic shark so you don't find them in shallow waters. They do come into the beaches more often to hunt during early mornings and evening. This leads us to believe that there might be an underlying reason as to why she was washing into the beach continually this morning."
