It has been reported today that British journalist and surfer Paul McClean 25, was 'grabbed and dragged' to his death by a crocodile while staying at Elephant Rock near Sri Lanka's popular Arugam Bay on Thursday 14 September.

The area has drawn increased attention in the surf world and for surf travel in recent years despite its known crocodile population that resides just meters from the surf breaks.

McClean is said to have been washing his hands in the lagoon named 'Crocodile Rock' before he was seen waving his hands in the air for help moments before the croc dragged him underwater. His body is yet to be found.

A fellow tourist in the area told the UK's Mirror "The Army were down there and there are people out on boats checking the shore because the crocodile won't eat anything in water; they will take it onto dry land to eat their prey."

The last person to be taken by a crocodile in the area was in April 2017. Crocodiles in the area have been seen to grow up to 17-20 feet in length.
