The Mattara Surf Classic is an iconic surf event in the Newcastle region. In its 56th year, it is expected to be bigger and better than ever with the announcement of its major partner Michillis and a $5,000 deal that will boost the prize package for the surfers. It's the kind of financial partnerships that will invigorate grass roots surfing and the local community.

The Michilis Mattara Surf Classic will be held at South Bar Beach on 20-21 October. The total prize pool $6,500, including a $3,000 first prize for the men’s open and $2,000 for the winner of the women’s combined open and junior division has got local pros and amateurs frothing. (an extra $1000 was added to the women's event this week thanks to a kind donation from a member of the public.)

Surfing Newcastle president Dan Frodsham is stoked that the contest is looking stronger than ever and is glad to see it with the potential to keep thriving. “Like the Mattara, Michilis has been around since the early 1960s and is proudly Novocastrian,” Frodsham said.

“Mattara was one of the most sought-after surfing crowns in Australia from the 1960s right through to the 1990s – it’s a title that has been won by no less than five world champions.

“With Michilis on board, we are looking to reinvigorate the contest over the next few years and once again put it on the radar of the country’s best surfers.”

Greg Keegan, who served as Contest Director for 19 Mattara Surf Classics, said it the level will continue to boom.

“We want to make Mattara great again – we plan to re-create it as a fun festival weekend that celebrates surfing, mixing high-calibre competition with retro events and spectator activities.

“Michilis has indicated that they are in for the long term and their support will help us re-establish the Mattara Surf Classic as the premier contest in Australia for club surfers.”

Entries are open now in the men’s, women’s and boys’ under 16 divisions on the Surfing NSW website.
