Video: UK Charger Breaks His Back At Giant Nazaré
If you've ever wondered why big wave surfers don't end up with serious injuries when charging giant swells, the answer is: They do.
A major swell event on Wednesday November 8 at the famed Portuguese big wave spot Nazaré, saw Andrew Cotton suffer a back injury when he experienced a horrifically large wipe-out.
"What can I say,” wrote the British big wave charger on his Instagram earlier today, presumably while benefitting from some powerful pain killers, “I got a little excited this morning and ending up having possibly the worst wipeout impact wise of my life. Thank you to all the lifeguards and crew on the beach who helped stabilise me and do a great spinal recovery, I can’t name everyone but you all did your bit to get me safely to the hospital."
He went on to thank his team of noted big wave hell man Garrett McNamara, Hugo Vau, and filmed Jorge Leal before stating, “have broken my back but I’ve been really lucky, I’m already looking forward and focusing my energy to get fit and back out there on some more big rollers.”

Nazare was host to a Big Wave World Tour event in December 2016, that featured Cotton, and was won by Australian Jamie Mitchell.
