The largest surfing festival in the country is up and running, with the Lake Mac Festival of Surfing and the Port Stephens Toyota Wildcard Trials taking place over the last week and weekend to mark the beginning of the iconic Surfest in Newcastle, NSW.

The trials, which serve as an entry pathway to the Men's QS6000 Burton Automotive Pro and the Women's QS6000 Grandstand Sports Clinic Women’s Pro were won by Troy Skillin from Norah Head and Alysse Cooper from Queenscliff.

As the first major QS of the season for the men, and the second major QS on the calendar for the women, it serves as an important event for QS surfers keen to take an early and commanding grip on their campaigns for the following Championship Tour year, as Yago Dora and Jesse Mendes of Brazil did in 2017, finishing first and second in Newcastle and then flying through the qualification process from there on. It was a similar story for Johanne Defay and Paige Hareb, who podiumed in Newy last year.

The main events get underway February 19 and run until February 25, but before then Newy will host a whole swag of events.

Key dates:

3rd - 4th February – Orica Teams Challenge
10th - 11th February – nib Pro Junior - WSL 1000 Men's and Women's
10th - 11th February – Sanbah Cadet Cup and Dalton Lawyers Cadet Girls presented by Arcbuild
13th -14th February – The James Bros Longboard Classic - WSL LQS 1000
15th - 16th February – Reflections Holiday Parks High School Team Challenge
17th - 18th February – Wandiyali Indigenous Classic

Presented in partnership with Destination NSW
