Paddle Outs, Everywhere

Sydney surfers, Vicco surfers, Cresso surfers, and South Aus surfers will have the opportunity this Sunday March 3 to show solidarity with one another in a special collective act unique to our community – the paddle out. There are two causes simultanousely being represented on the Sunday worth knowing a lot about.

First up, in Sydney Surfrider is holding a paddle out the front of the Sydney Opera House in conjunction with Clean-Up Australia, to celebrate and honour Clean-Up Australia's exceptional 30 year history in the war against waste, as well as to honour and commemorate the passing of Clean-Up Australia's founder Ian Kearnan. Kearnan was a competitive sailer who represented Australia in the 1986/87 BOC Challenge – a single handed round the World Yacht Race. While on the journey, setting an Australian record, Kearnan was disgusted by the amount of rubbish he saw clogging the world's oceans. He organised a community event, Clean Up Sydney Harbour, in 1989 and was met with a response of 40,000 volunteers who collected over 5000 tonnes of garbage. 30 years, 16 million volunteers and 350,000 ute loads of rubbish later, Clean Up Australia Day is the largest community mobilisation event of its kind.

In attendance and taking part in the paddle out will be surfing legends Tom Carroll, Rob Bain, and Simon Anderson.

Time: 9am, Sunday March 3
Location: Man O War Steps, at the Opera House
Details: Paddle Out At The House Facebook Page

And then, to the Fight For The Bight Paddle Outs happening all over the joint on Sunday also.

These paddle outs are in protest of Equinor – a Norwegian Energy company – and its plans to deep-sea drill into the Great Australian Bight for oil. Equinor's own estimations show that a worst case oil spill could have devastating impact on coasts ranging from Margaret River to Port Macquarie, (including Tassie) an unfathomably large stretch of coast.

You've likely heard of this issue already, and if you haven't you should give Nick Carroll's piece on the issue a read right now, and then you should head to the Equinor Public Comment page and let them know exactly how you feel about this.

And theeeeeen, if you're within range, you can show solidarity with so many other surfers concerned about this by joining one of the following paddle outs (or stand on the shore) in the #FightForTheBight.
