The Quiksilver Pro Gold Coast Gets Going – Highlights from D-Bah

Hoooooo boy, we're back! The WSL CT got underway yesterday (Wednesday April 3) with Day 1 of the Quiksilver Pro Gold Coast firing off in fun and punchy consistent beachbreak waves at D-Bah. With a giant hole where sand normally forms a world class bank off Snapper Rocks, the initial precedings were moved south to the ever-reliable beachie, but will likely be moved back to Rainbow Bay/Greenmount before the event's end.

Day 1 also featured the WSL's new format, where both the winners and the second place getters of the three man Round 1 heats would make their way into Round 3, with the losers heading to a three man Round 2 heat (where the format would be repeated – top two to advance to Round 3).

Standout performers early were Yago Dora, who logged the highest heat total of the day, World Champ Gabriel Medina, who logged the highest wave total of the day, Mikey Wright, who ripped the bag and took down John John Florence (as is becoming somewhat of a Quik Pro Gold Coast tradition), while fellow rookies Soli Bailey and Seth Moniz looked solid and comfortable.

Amongst those disappointed to be relegated to the four-heats of Round 2 would be Australia's great hope Julian Wilson, Jordy Smith and the GOAT, Kelly Slater.

The event was followed by the WSL's new Red Bull Airborn aerial competition, which on the beach of D-Bah amongst shitty weather, with some of the funnest guys surfing has to offer going nuts in the water, gave the vibe of the funnest boardriders event ever. It's likely that they'll finish that sideshow off today, tailing the big show of Round 1 of the Women's Boost Mobile Pro.
