COASTALWATCH | NEWS

Kelly Slater just finished equal last at the Quiksilver Pro Gold Coast.

The surfing world has been speculating that 2019 will likely be the final year on the Championship Tour for the greatest surfer of all time, Mr. 11-Time World Champion. And if that's the case, Slater's final year has not begun well. Not well at all. "Badly" would be a good way to put it, actually.

In his three man Round 2 heat at Duranbah today, Slater had to only beat one of his two competitors to progress into Round 3, but Australian Owen Wright and Brazillian Peterson Crisanto – alongside a shifty beachbreak – didn't allow him to do that. Slater was of course in Round 2 after also finishing last in his Round 1 heat with Yago Dora and Italo Ferreira yesterday.

While the Round 2 heat took place, in-the-water commentator Strider Wasilewski described to the broadcast that Slater was quite vocal and emotional out the back.

Slater lamented in his post-heat interview that he failed to read the line-up as well as his opponents, and opted for an end of the beach that didn't deliver:

"I mean at the end of the day, I didn’t get a lot of opportunities my waves were kinda flat, they picked it better… But it’s a tough pill to swallow…”

“I haven’t been able to read the line-up here this week, I did’t put enough time in out here," he added.

Slater has been dogged by injuries the last couple of years, but has had a better runway into 2019, which has many assuming would allow one more final crack at a 12th World Title for the greatest surfer to ever live, as well as a crack at 2020 Olympic Qualification. He also commented post-heat on how that might have affected his performance:

“I think all the pressure and the build up has thrown me off enjoying it … I’d rather cry than laugh right now.”

Following a less than desirable warm-up event at the Sydney Surf Pro at Manly a couple of weeks ago, where Slater won one heat and then finished last in his four-man Round 3 QS heat, back to back losses in his first two heats of a possible last ever Championship Tour event on the Gold Coast for him... this as bad a start as he could possibly have had. Spose the dude is 47... and an actual human after all.

Let's hope he can bounce back for the rest of the Australian leg.
