Monday dawns sunny on the boys and brilliant on the girls

Been a good Haleiwa so far for the Australian men’s QS contenders. Most of the higher ranked crew got through the weekend’s large wobbly surf and into the big seeding 48 round, and pretty much did it in style. Liam O’Brien seemed to catch the WSL commentary team unawares with a long limbed power attack that pushed him through easy, but also looked like it had more to show. Banting was cool and did what was necessary, Jack Robbo and Jacob Willcox did the same, Morgan Cibilic didn’t look too harassed by the medial tear, Caleb Tancred eked one out in late-day messiness, and Ethan Ewing put class all over everything he rode.

No such fortune for Stuey Kennedy and Jordy Lawler. They both got caught on the wrong end of the conditions and didn’t have second scores of note.

Some fantastic surfing going on in Haleiwa’s fractured bowls, great effort from Cooper Chapman who looks on fire.

The event’s energy has obviously nudged up this morning with the injection of the big seeds, even in the first couple of heats it was obvious the bar had been lifted, just in the size and timing of moves. Watch if you can.

Meanwhile, up in Port Stephens, the women killed. Isabella Nichols, Macy Callaghan and Keely Andrew all forced the issue to set up CT seeds for 2020. Fantastic efforts, Isabella got the QS overall title in the process. If we were in a position to offer advice to her, which luckily for her we aren’t, we’d say, get on a plane to Hawaii and go and watch that last CT on Maui. Because the leap from QS to CT for the women is even bigger than it is for the men. You gotta get in touch with what you’re gonna face.
