Shire puts plans on hold after its latest public meeting

Remember the controversy over the gigantic walkway concept at Winkipop, Bells Beach’s racy little sister?

If not, read about it here.

For reasons best known to themselves, but perhaps partly because they’d already been granted $128,000 by the State Government to do it, the Shire was dead keen on building the structure. When a survey of locals showed near unanimous opposition to it, the survey was dismissed as having been infected by “community activism”.

Well after a Surf Coast Shire meeting last night that was open to the public, ie those community activists among others, the Shire has decided not to do it after all.

Instead, a temporary version of the same size and height will be set up during the Rip Curl Pro to assess its impact, before any further talk of building a permanent one.

It’s not clear who will be paying for this temporary structure. The SCS had earmarked $53,000 of ratepayers’ funds to supplement the $128,000 of State money for the project.
