UPDATE (Tuesday March 31 2020): Given the current COVID-19 crisis, this event has been cancelled. See the statement from the Big Wave Risk Assessment below:

"The health and safety of our students, staff, and instructors, and of the community at large, is our greatest priority. As such, the summits for the first six months of 2020 are currently on hold until further notice. As a risk management organization, we are monitoring the situation daily and will continue to reassess as the information and guidance necessary to empower our decisions becomes available.

We ask our global 'ohana to fulfill their responsibility to the greater good and to the wellbeing of those who are vulnerable. Please kokua (help) by abiding the recommendations of the WHO, CDC, and government officials, in an effort to stem the spread of this virus, protect the abilities of hospitals and health workers to handle this crisis, and prevent more lives lost. This too shall pass, but we must come together and do what is needed. Aloha"

The Big Wave Risk Assessment Group is a body that exists to educate in ocean risk management, safety protocols, safety equipment and technology, and skills training to maximise safe practices in the ocean.

And this March they'll be hosting a summit in Torquay open to everyone from recreational surfers to big wave pros.

BWRAG will kick off the year in Australia with its first summit of 2020 held in Torquay, Victoria, from March 21-22. The Torquay Summit will be held at the RACV Resort and will be led by BWRAG Chief Master Instructor Pat Chong Tim, alongside Patagonia ambassadors Dan Ross and Zeb Walsh.

Rossy and Zeb were inspired to bring the BWRAG educational program to Australia after attending the 2018 BWRAG Hawaii Summit on Oahu’s North Shore. In 2019, two BWRAG summits were held here - one in Torquay, Victoria and the other in Austinnmer, New South Wales.

The 2020 BWRAG Torquay Summit will feature both classroom and in-water curriculum, including comprehensive training in ocean risk management, case scenario analysis, dynamic breath hold training, medical intervention training, safety product showcases, CPR/AED training, and open-ocean first-responder training. The dynamic breath hold training will be presented by Nam Baldwin of the internationally recognized Breath Enhancement Training program.

And, as said before, all surfers, of all ages and abilities are welcome.
