A timely Spring swell greeted Victoria’s very best young surfers on the Surfcoast for the Quiksilver State Titles and the under 18, 16 and 13 Boy and Girl divisions reveled in the solid swells at Jan Juc beach today.

The biggest surprise result of round one came with number one seed Todd Rosewell who placed second in his opening round heat behind Phillip Island’s Jarvis Cinninas. Fortunately for Rosewell, second in the four man heats is still good enough to progress through to tomorrow’s semi finals.

Cinninas’s form today sends a clear message to all competing here that regardless of Rosewell’s great state, national and international performances over the past 12 months, he’s certainly beatable, even on his home beachbreaks.

Other impressive quarter finalists in the under 18 Boys included Tom Allen (Jan Juc) along with Airey’s Inlet pair Campbell Downey and Seb Hansen Boyd who all won their way through to tomorrows semi finals.

Downey was particularly strong in the solid waves posting the highest heat scoring win and commented on conditions saying – “It’s a lot of fun with some really solid waves coming through – I managed to pick off the right waves that peeled consistently so it was a good heat for me and I’m looking forward to the semi’s tomorrow.”

Downey and Rosewell, the two top seeds in the under 18’s, will meet in the second semi tomorrow due to Rosewell advancing in second place today. That is certain to be a power packed encounter with Angus Forrest and Seb Hansen Boyd also in the semi and very capable of causing an upset against their more fancied opponents.

Girls under 18 finalists were decided today and as expected local surfer Darci Egan moved through impressively to the final where she’ll face fellow Jan Juc surfer Tess Galbraith along with talented Phillip Island pair Nikki Van Dijk and Georgia Fish.

Under 16 Boys surfed through two divisions across the low tide today in very challenging conditions with Bells Beach resident surfer Shyma Buttonshaw the standout.

“ I had a very ordinary round one heat win – in fact I surfed really bad and was surprised when I came in to hear that I actually won the heat – Round two was way better for me and I’m hopeful that I’ve had my worst heat and can go on and maybe win!”

Shyma’s toughest opponent will likely be Mitch Baker (Phillip Island) who showed his characteristic power and style to win through to tomorrow’s semi finals.

Under 13 Boys also battled the torrid swells today to decide their finalists for tomorrow which is expected to see excellent conditions with hot offshore winds and slightly smaller but still excellent swells to provide a perfect finish for all divisions.

Semi finals across all divisions will begin around 8:00am with finals to be completed by 12:30pm.
