Tragedy has once again struck the North Coast NSW surf community today with the news that a shark attack has killed a surfer at Salt Beach, just south of Kingscliff.
The surfer was a 60-year-old man from Tugun, QLD.
The attack is reported to have happened just after 10am, after which a group of surfers came to the man's aid fighting off the shark and helping him to the beach. Sadly, the man died on the scene with severe injuries to his upper thigh.
Terry Savage from NSW Ambulance told the ABC that the man's injuries were "significant" and that the scene was "very confronting".
Surf Lifesaving NSW have since confirmed the shark to be a three metre white shark.
Local Kingscliff surfer Stuart Gonsal told the ABC there had been a lot of fishing boats out on the water and there was "a fair bit of action out there in terms of fish today".
Beaches between Kingscliff and Cabarita will remain closed for 24 hours.
The North Coast of NSW is of course no stranger to tragic shark incidents, most memorably in recent times those of 2015 and 2016 which sparked a national discussion around shark encounters and the eventual employment of a smart drumline array which has been responsible for catching and tagging nearly 350 great white sharks in the area.
It is always a terribly sad day for surfing when someone dies doing the thing we love. Today the surfing community will come together in mourning. Coastalwatch's thoughts are with the victim's family, as well as the communities of Tugun and Kingscliff.
