The start of the Roxy Surf Festival has been delayed for 24 hours with below par conditions on offer at Phillip Island, today.

With the diverse range of breaks on the Island capable of producing high quality surf, organisers opted to wait.

“The swell is too big for Woolamai today and it’s too inconsistent at the other end of the Island,” said Event Director Max Wells.

“The swell is dropping so I’m confident that we will have excellent waves at Woolamai to commence competition in tomorrow morning,” added Wells.

The 7th annual Roxy Surf Festival has attracted some of the sports biggest names to its blue ribbon 6 star ASP women’s world qualifying tournament. World no.4 Samantha Cornish (Crescent Head, NSW), world no.6 Amee Donohoe (Copacabana, NSW) and world no. 8 Jessi Miley-Dyer (Bronte) NSW) are all included in the international line-up.

The Roxy Surf Festival will also feature an ASP Longboard contest, a 6 star Roxy Pro Junior and amateur divisions.

The upgrading of the Roxy Longboard event to a 3 star has attracted the best international field ever seen on Australia’s shores.

Reigning ASP World Longboard Champion Jennifer Smith (San Diego, CA, USA) and stylish Kassia Meador (Oceanside, CA, USA) are just two of the big names competing.

The pair will face a huge Australian contingent including defending Roxy Longboard champion Chelsea Williams (Tweed Heads) in the nations richest longboard event.

The 2 top place getters will receive a top round seed to the Roxy ASP World Championship July 9th – 14th 2008, which will decide the ASP Women’s World Championship at Cote des Basques, Biarritz, France.

The Roxy Surf Festival is the world’s biggest celebration of women’s surfing bringing together a huge cross section of participants and carries at total of US$45000 in prize money.

Conditions will be re-accessed tomorrow morning with an 8am start expected.

The Roxy Surf Festival is proudly supported by the Victorian State Government "Play it Safe by the Water” and is held in association with ASP Australasia, Surfing Victoria, Bass Coast Shire Council and Phillip Island Nature Park.
