Wright Rewrites Record Books At Billabong Occy’s Grom Comp

(Tuesday 8th July, 2008): THE future of female surfing in Australia looks in good hands after Culburra sensation Tyler Wright trumped Sunshine Coast’s Naomi Stevic to bag a record fourth Billabong Occy’s Grom Comp title on the Gold Coast today.

Carrying on from her three previous 14 and under victories, Wright further stamped her reputation as the next big thing in Australian surfing, taking down a stacked field of the country’s finest female junior surfers to add the blue ribbon 16 and under girl's crown to her name.

However, it was no easy for 14-year-old Wright, forced to click into overdrive to upstage a who’s who of young Australian talent.

In clean 1-metre beach break waves at Duranbah, Wright defeated Sunrise Beach ripper Stevic, Western Australia’s Laura Macaulay and Kingscliff’s Cody Klein en route to championship glory.

“It feels so awesome to continue my winning streak,” said Wright, who is fresh from a runner-up placing in the U/18 division of the ISA World Junior Titles in France in May.

“It's such a good event to win. Occy is definitely a legend in my eyes, so to win another crown in his event is awesome.”

The talented natural foot saved her best for last, jagging a set wave three-quarters of the way through the 20-minute final before unloading a succession of critical front side moves to land a 7.37.

Despite Stevic’s best efforts to defend her lead, Wright continued to apply the pressure, coming from behind to seal the win in the last two minutes with a heat-high 8.83.

Wright finishing with a 16.20 two-wave combination (out of a possible 20) to Stevic’s 14.83.

Stevic's runner-up finish marked her best result of the year, offering a small amount of consolation for her narrow defeat.

“I’m pretty stoked,” said Stevic. “Tyler surfed so well and I just needed another wave to beat her but I’m still super happy with my result.”

Macaulay (10.13) finished in third, while Klein (8.70) took home fourth.

With the 16 and under girls run and won by Wright, the youngest division across the five-division tournament, the 12 and under boys, kicked off their campaigns.

Showing maturity beyond their years, the super grommets of the Australian surfing scene shredded and carved their way through round one of competition.

Led by Wright’s younger brother Michael ‘Mini’ Wright and local grom Jordy Harrington, competitors as young as nine donned competition rash vests in the quest for 12 and under supremacy.

Highlights of the 14 and under boy’s quarterfinals included the elimination of hot favourite and former event winner Creed McTaggart (Margaret River) by Coolangatta kid Mitchell Parkinson, who is the cousin of world tour competitor Joel Parkinson.

Competition will resume tomorrow morning at 8am with the finals of the four remaining divisions being contested.
