Wednesday September 23 2009, Immediate Release: Victoria’s cold weather blew in on the Rip Curl GromSearch today with a strong cold front creating wind-swept difficult conditions at Jan Juc for the 120 strong field of Australia’s top 16 and under surfers competing at the Rip Curl GromSearch.

Jan Juc beach break delivered it’s very best yesterday and today it was close to its worst with the harsh south-westerlies and small swells making high scoring rides very difficult.

Despite the conditions, surfers were still able to adapt and number of admirable performances were achieved.

Phillip Island surfer Nikki Van Dijk continued her excellent form this year by easily winning her opening heat in the 16 Girls division. An excellent 8 point ride on a day when extracting excellence from these waves was hard highlighted the potential Van Dijk continues to display.

Fellow Phillip island surfer India Payne was similarly impressive also winning her opening heat of the 16 Girls defeating highly rated Gold Coast surfer Brodie Doyle.

Both progressed through to round three and will be relieved to know that conditions for the final two days are expected to improve very quickly.

The 16 Boys round two heats were also run today and talented Maroubra surfer Jake Scott was the standout, scoring an excellent 8 point ride on his way to the easiest heat win of the day.

Scott was rewarded with the SNICKERS wave of the day award for his efforts and he’ll go into tomorrow’s round three full of confidence.

Victorian surfers were also strong today. Jan Juc’s Chase Galbraith was able to utilize his extensive local knowledge to survive a close heat, placing second in the four man heat to advance behind fellow Victorian Brock Jeffrey – Warren who continued the good form from Phillip Island surfers to win the heat.

“It’s tough out there” said Jeffrey-Warren after his heat win.

“It’s not just the onshore wind, it’s also the uneven weak swells coming through making it very hard to choose decent waves, hopefully that’s the worst of the surf for the vent and I’m luckily through!”

Winds are forecast to turn back offshore and conditions for the coming final two days of the GromSearch will be significantly better.

All winners of the 16's division get an invite to Bell's for the National Final and following on from last year the highest placed non event winner on the GromSearch Ratings will also get an invite.
Eventual ratings winners of the 14's divisions will get a two board quiver from one of Rip Curl's leading shapers.

The Strapper Surf GROMSEARCH 'FRESH START’ is scheduled to go tomorrow at 11am- The GROMSEARCH FRESH START concept is to encourage any young surfers in the region, who haven't competed at this level before, to bring their gear to the event and have surf.

The ever popular SNICKERS EXPRESSION SESSIONS will be run every day & encourage any participants to have a go with prizes and awards for notable performances from all age groups.

Rip Curl GromSearch Series is presented by Snickers, with valued support from Surfing Australia and media partners Waves Magazine and Fuel TV.
