Michael Spencer (Lake Munmorah, NSW) etched his name is history today, winning the Wild Surf Co. Mattara Pro at Bar Beach in the dying minutes.

As the fifth event on the prestigious Hurley NSW Championship Circuit for 2009, the Wild Surf Co. Mattara saw some of Australia’s best open surfers going ballistic today in amazing conditions.

Joining an honour roll that reads like a who’s who of Australian surfing, including the likes of Michael Peterson, Nat Young, Mark Richards, Damien Hardman, Tom Carroll, Shane Powell, Spencer defeated Craig Anderson Craig Anderson (Merewether, NSW), Keelan Veitch (Jannali, NSW) and 15-year-old Cooper Chapman (North Narrabeen, NSW) in an action packed final.

Accruing a total heat score of 13.00 (out of a possible 20), Spencer walked away with $1200 in cash and his first win at a major contest in some time.

“I’m stoked,” he said.

Going down to the wire, Spencer pulled out an 8.17 (out of a possible 10) with a mere two minutes remaining to elevate him from fourth to first, leap frogging his counterparts in style.

“That wave just popped up out of nowhere and I was lucky enough to be in the right place at the right time,” he said modestly.

“It was such a good way to win.”

Having travelled the world on the ASP World Qualifying Series (WQS) and previously hailed as one of Australia’s brightest junior stars, Spencer was relieved to take the title today.

“It’s my first win in a while, so it feels especially good.”

Spencer was also impressed to join such an esteemed list.

“To join the likes of MR, Nat Young, MP and some of the world’s best ever surfers is a great feeling,” he added.
