KIRRA SURFSTOCK A FESTIVAL TO CELEBRATE
To be held from Currumbin to Kirra Beach QLD, November 5th to 8th 2009
The Kirra SurfStock will be a Festival to celebrate, create awareness and bring families and communities together have some fun and is not a rally to protest. Our rally to save Kirra was held on Australia Day when 3,000 people turned up to paddle in a peaceful but symbolic protest. This prompted both Government and Council to hear the people and act on their concerns. The Qld State Government maintains a rock solid guarantee to help fix Kirra allocating $1.5 million that was offered during the March State election. Qld Minister for Sustainability and Climate change Kate Jones is adamant that the State Government will not walk away from this election promise despite saying that Nature and Wave God Huey moved 200,000 cubic metres of sand during the constant swell periods from February to July.
The Government and GCCC are now looking at moving 60,000 cubic metres of sand, 75 metres back from the shoreline into a 1.5 metre sloping sand dune from the corner of Kirra Point to North Kirra. This will be the first positive step to Bring Back Kirra and work could start prior to the December school holidays with any luck!
Meanwhile it’s all go for the inaugural Kirra SurfStock presented by Connecting Southern Gold Coast and in association with Kirra Surf and many local business tipping in to create a 4 night and three day festival from Thursday 5th to Sunday 8th November.
