Paddington’s Chauvel Cinema was filled to capacity on Tuesday night October 27, as the city’s surf fraternity and media and gathered for the Australian premiere of Rob Machado’s movie ‘The Drifter’.

Renowned as one of the greatest surfers of his generation, Californian Rob Machado was ranked among the top ten for eleven straight years and holds 12 World Championship Tour victories under his belt. Following the six-month walkabout of surfing’s most recognisable characters, ‘The Drifter’ documents Machado’s adventures in Indonesia, from new worlds to mega waves and his constant quest for complete isolation.

After pre-drinks, the crowd entered the theatre to be greeted by Machado himself strumming his guitar on stage – the film’s star chatted with the audience, handed out prizes including Hurley board shorts and an iPod Touch, and introduced the surf biopic, before joining the audience to watch the feature length film.

Featuring a guest appearance from Kelly Slater and directed by Taylor Steele, ‘The Drifter’ was released by Hurley and Warner Bros and has been touring the world with limited screenings. The Australian premiere was sponsored by Corona, VAS Entertainment, Hurley, Surfing Magazine, and Life Without Andy.
