Women’s Division to Strengthen Australian Stand Up Paddleboard Titles at 2010 Country Energy Australian Surf Festival

SHORTBOARDS, longboards and even stand up paddleboards (SUP) will feature at the Country Energy Australian Surf Festival, which kicks off in Port Macquarie later this month.
And, for the first time, it will include a women’s SUP division to complement the men’s.
The inaugural Australian SUP Titles at last year’s festival made waves across the nation with Queensland’s Josh Constable making history as its first ever winner.
The 2010 SUP titles is set to be even bigger, with an extended round of 24 competitors lining up in the men’s and a round of 8 in the maiden women’s division.
Team NSW will post a talented SUP squad including Ben Apps (East Corrimal), Noel Graham (Lennox Head), Rodger Saunders (Minnie Water), Scott Downing (Woonona) , Sinclair Black (Coffs Harbour) and Andrew Cassidy (Mona Vale) in the men’s and Sondra Purser (Merewether) and Cinde Fisher (Crescent Head) in the women’s.
The Queensland SUP team is also well represented with Jackson Close (Currumbin), Keahi De Aboitz (Noosa), Jamie Whillems (Moffat Beach) and Tully St John (Sunrise Beach) in the men’s and Davina Drinan (Mermaid Beach) and Alison Fullgar (Palm Beach) to don a competition singlet in the women’s.
Competitors from Victoria, Western Australia, South Australia and Tasmania will also be competing over both divisions.
Surfing NSW Operations Manager Peter Hunt is excited about the addition of the women’s division to the SUP event.
“Stand Up Paddleboarding continues to grow at an incredible rate and with increasing numbers of females taking up the surfing discipline it is only fitting that a Women’s division be added in 2010.”
“The level of performance shown at the recent NSW SUP Titles by the female competitors was outstanding and with a National Title on the line, I’m sure the bar will be raised again.”
The official waiting period for the Australian SUP titles will be from Sunday 22nd August to Wednesday 25th August, 2010.
