Craig Anderson looking right at home at Newcastle.

It’s been an interesting year for Craig Anderson. Having ditched the contest-singlet after a short-lived dalliance with the WQS earlier this year and shifted focus to filming over winter, Ando's spent the last few months touring around OZ and Indo nailing footage for Taylor Steele's Innersection, amongst other projects. Coastalwatch caught up with him for a chat at home in Newcastle after an epic day at Merewether.

CW:The footage looks it was pumping at Merewether. Tell us about the session…
CA:I got back from the Mentawaiis on Friday so it was only my second surf back. It was really good to see Merewether firing. It doesn’t happen very often, so it was pretty crowded. Everyone was out there, -even MR, who I haven’t seen surf out there for a while. He paddled past me and said, “It looks like a proper point-break”. It was one of the best banks out there I’ve ever seen, with four-to-five foot of south swell. I only got one good wave. And the water was freezing. It was fun. I had a good time.

It looked like you were cruising out there. What board were you riding?
It’s a 5’4” Hayden Shapes. I’m just digging on super-fun, cruisey boards at the moment. I couldn’t be bothered going out there on my shortboard and trying airs and doing turns. I was just out there to cruise. I just got back from Indo too.

Must’ve been a bit of a temperature shock…
Oh, it was crazy. I couldn’t believe it. And I couldn’t find my steamer. I wasted about 45 minutes at home trying to find one. All my friends just get a hold of ‘em and “look after” them. I ended up borrowing my friend’s wettie.

So have you spent much time at home this winter?
I tried to. At the start of the year I was trying to make sure I was home. I kept winter freed-up so I could hang at home ‘cause I always miss out on good waves at home. But I stayed at home for a month or two and got absolutely skunked. There weren’t any good waves. So I flew over to West Oz and South Oz and got some fun waves. I tried to stay home, but it was just terrible.

You’ve been filming on all these trip?
Yeah, I’ve been filming. I was working on Taylor Steele’s Innersection, which is an online project. I qualified for round two so for May, June, July and August I was working on that. We got some fun waves in Indo and a couple of days at home and a few days in West Oz. I’ve just been filming a bunch and taking photos as well.

Nice. Are you back home for a while now? When are you off again?
I’m here for another week or two. I’ll just see what the waves are doing, but it’s not looking too crash-hot at the moment [laughs]. I get pretty surfed-out when I go away, so I don’t mind just coming home and kicking back and not surfing that much. But when it’s good I’ll surf. I’m off to California at the end of the month, in about ten days.

What’s going on over there?
Not much, really. Just hanging out with all the Quiksilver guys, doing some stuff over there for them. When I’m over there it’s usually good, but I’ll see what happens. It’s pretty cold. I might go straight from there to Hawaii or come home, see what’s going on, then fly to Hawaii when there’s waves.

You haven’t been competing much this year?
Nah. I did a couple of comps at the start of the year and I didn;’t go any good and I didn’t have any fun. So I was kinda over it.

The freesurfing thing seems to be working out pretty well for you. What’s the plan for 2011?
2011?? I have no idea. It seems so far away, but I guess it’s just around the corner. I’m just going to do a bunch of trips. I’ve got no plans. I’m just gonna go where the waves are good around OZ. Do the Quikky Pro and then head over to Indo. Wherever the waves are, I’ll be. Hopefully.

Any standouts you’ve been surfing with lately?
I surfed little ripbowl up on the Central Coast with Ryan Callinan. He’s going mad. He’s only 18 and he’s surfing really good. I’ve been surfing a bunch with him at home. He was out there on the weekend. He’s surfing really well; super consistent. Also Hoyo. He was on the trip in the Mentawaiis, just blowing up and doing his thing. And all the old Merewether boys out there that Sunday…

It must be a bit of a reunion when Newy turns on…
Yeah, you see everyone come out of the woodwork; a lot of old boards… I really like surfing at home when it’s good.
