Girdler and Wawn take out the Wahu Surfer Groms Comp at Dee Why

(Sunday 5th December, 2010): Summer finally showed up at the Northern Beaches instalment of the nationwide Wahu Surfer Groms Comp series today, with temperatures on land matching the action in the water as competition on finals day fired up.

Clean 1m (3 foot) waves greeted competitors for day two at Curl Curl Beach, with a fine selection of Australia’s best ‘micro groms’ stepping it up a gear for some epic final battles.

Performance levels in the under 15 boys’ division continued to rise as competition progressed through the quarter and semi finals and with a new easterly swell starting to pulse for the final, tha stage was set for an epic climax.

Division favourites Sam Bond (Newport Beach) and Monty Tait (Maroubra) led out strongly but it was Harry Girdler (Avalon) who tore the house down with a near-excellent ride to lock in a 7.5.

Despite a see-sawing battle between Bond and Jacob Hooker (Woonona), Girdler was able to lock in a back up wave and keep his cool in the line up to maintain his lead and eventually take the title.

“I’m super happy to win here today”, said Girdler. “All the guys were ripping through the semis and in the final too.”

“Luckily I was able to hold my lead through the final by maintaining a good position in the line up”.

Finishing second behind Girdler was Hooker in second, Bond third and Tait in fourth.

Meanwhile, the Under 15 Girls saw an intense rivalry develop between Cali McDonagh (Lennox Head) and Holly Wawn (Newport) as they surfed a best of two finals. In the first final it was McDonagh who had the edge, out-scoring Wawn by less than 0.5 of a point. However Wawn turned it around in the second final, dominating from the outset to take the heat win and with a higher combined 2-heat total, Wawn claimed the division title.

“I’m stoked to win here today”, said Wawn. “I won the Under 13s last year so to make the step up a division and win feels great, especially against Cali who is a great surfer”.

The Under 13 Boys was a tightly fought affair but it was Mona Vale’s Paul Keaveney who shone above the pack winning from North Curl Curl surfers Jamie Krups and Harley Ross-Webster in second and third respectively with Ben Hucker (Long Jetty) in fourth.

Not to be outdone, the Under 13 Girls saw a close contest take place with Allyse Cooper claiming victory over Alyssa Lock (Tweed Heads) who placed second with Isabella Wilton (Manly, NSW) in third.

The 11 Boys Final was won by with Mitchell Raymond (McMasters Beach, NSW), with Kyuss King (Byron bay) in second, Mikey McDonagh (Lennox Head, NSW) in third and Sandon Whittaker (Avoca Beach, NSW) in fourth.

After her second place in the Under 13s Alyssa Lock went one better in the Under 11s winning the division title from Kiara Meredith (Barack Heights), with Gabrielle Paul (Piha, NZ) third and Sienna Coulter (Balgowlah Heights in fourth.

The Under 9s Parent Assist Division saw some awe-inspiring efforts by the true ‘micro grommets’ of the event. With each competitor permitted to be assisted in the water by their parent, the opportunity is tailor made for the honing of competition skills without feeling unsafe.

Lennox Chell (Avoca Beach) made it back to back Wahu Surfer Groms Comp wins by defeating Beau Buckpitt (Culburra Beach) in second, Isaac Wheeler (Avalon) in third and Ruben Casteigt in fourth.

The Wahu Surfer Groms Comps will now move to the Gold Coast, Queensland with event five of the eight-event series kicking off on December 11.

The Wahu Surfer Groms Comp – Northern Beaches, is proudly supported by Suncorp, Surfing Australia and Surfing NSW.
