Peter Townend the first World Professional champion of Surfing circa 1976 will MC for the opening night for the Bobby Brown exhibition at the Golden Breed Surf Store, Noosa Heads on Monday night 14th of March from 6.30pm. PT is one of the original Coolangatta kids from the seventies period where he surfed with Rabbit Bartholomew and Michael Peterson. He then moved to Cronulla and was sponsored by Gordon and Smith Surfboards G&S who had sponsored Bobby Brown in the sixties. "Right around the time I was getting into surfing we lost Bobby Brown but for me I felt his legacy as I spent much of the early seventies as a transient resident of Cronulla shaping for G&S where he was revered!" said PT who is now based in California was at Snapper Rocks this week to witness Kelly Slater's epic win at the Quiksilver Pro.

The BB exhibition features classic sixties photo’s from Bob Weeks, Dave Milne, Barrie Sutherland, Albe Falzon and Jack Eden, movies from Bob Evans and Paul Witzig, Bobby's original surfboards, memorabilia and personal artifacts. Bobby Brown was a State, National and a World title finalist when Midget Farrely won the very first World title in 1964 at Manly Beach. Robert Eric Brown was rated as one of the all–time greats of Australian surfing who was tragically struck down in his prime in August 1967 at only 20 years of age.

Bobby Brown began surfing as a member of the Wanda Surf Club, Cronulla in 1957. The Brown Family had three sons older brotherJohn and Terry who all surfed living opposite Wanda beach. Older brother John was responsible for getting Bobby started in surfing as he had the first surfboard and would allow Bobby to share it. His parents Jack and Glady's were fully supportive of their son's surfing talent recognizing that Bobby had a special gift amongst other things. He worked as carpentar for his Dad's building company and was taught how to shape boards professionally by Floyd Smith of California who established the G&S label on the Southside of Sydney in the sixties.

He was engaged to childhood sweetheart Lorraine McIntyre and they were planning to marry and go to Hawaii for their honeymoon. Bobby's carpentry committments with his Dad have prevented him from travelling overseas and competiting in the 1966 World titles at Sand Diego won by Nat Young but it didn't stop Bobby from joining his mates travelling around Australia on their surf safari missions. As soon as he he purchased his first car, a working utility he would take Lorraine on his surf trips from Bells Beach to Noosa.

As Lorraine recalls one of the Noosa trips, "We travelled there to Noosa with Midget and Bev (Farrelly) after Bobby had made the National open finals at Coolangatta in 1966. I remember it quite clearly. There was only a small road in and one motel down near the beach. Bev and Midget stayed in the motel and Robert and I slept in the back of the ute, it had a canopy." Referring to the love of her life as Robert, Lorraine said " Robert was never one with a need to impress and liked to enjoy the basics in life!"

Golden Breed store’s retail manager- Dane Wilson, who is CEO of Gordon and Smith Australia, continued the G&S tradition from his father Dave who had worked with G&S since day one, glassing all of Bobby’s boards and Dane has now reproduced replica models of Bobby's famous stringerless design for the Exhibition. Floyd Smith has flown over from America especially to attend the Exhibition and while in Noosa has shaped 6 classic G&S Bobby Brown models which will be available for sale. Dane Wilson who is a former Australian Longboard champion has pointed out that these exclusive latest editions are a one-off and will be showcased in the Golden Breed Surf Store.

Admittance to the BB Exhibition will be a gold coin donation for the Qld State Premiers flood relief fund.
In attendance for the Monday night opening launch will be Bobby’s oldest brother John, Bobby’s fiancée Lorraine McIntyre, American co-founder of Gordon and Smith surfboards, Floyd Smith and many other surfing dignitaries including Bobby's old mates making the special trip to pay tribute and to catch up at the Opening Ceremony on Monday 14th March at the Golden Breed Store, 15 Noosa Drive, Noosa Heads from 6.30pm.
All for the Love of Bobby!
