Action Packed Weekend in Store at Noosa Festival Of Surfing

The sunny surf town of Noosa is anticipating an action packed weekend of world-class longboarding as the Noosa Festival of Surfing draws to completion this weekend.

After a phenomenal week of  style and skill, not to mention some fierce competition, a total of 20 wave riders will be crowned champions in their respective divisions come Sunday.

The weekend’s action kicks off at 07h00 on Saturday with the Suncorp Family Challenge featuring 24 families including the world’s first pro champion Peter Towned (AUS) who will be teaming up with his son Jye. Former two times ASP Women’s World Longboard champion Jennifer Smith (USA) teams up with her dad Pablo and together will be tough to beat in this division.

Noosa families taking up the challenge include Matt and Win Cuddihy, Brett and Peter White as well as Jackson and Paul Winter.

Saturday also sees both round 2 as well as the semifinals of the Sunshine Airport Noserider Pro at approximately 14H20 featuring the first of the seeded surfers including the very talented Harrison Roach (Sunshine Beach, QLD).

There will be a tandem surfing exhibition at 13h40 followed by a legends exhibition at 14H00.

Sunday sees the finals of all twenty divisions starting with the U15 boys at 07h00 and culminating with the Pro Women’s and Mens finals starting at 14h00.

Today’s action saw some determined performances from surfers hoping to earn their places alongside Australia’s best during round 1 of the Sunshine Coast Airport Noserider Pro.

Despite the small conditions surfers battled it out ‘on the nose’ with twelve surfers advancing into the all important round 2.

Leading the field was Alexandra’s Luke Potter who recorded the longest ‘nose time’ of approximately 7.76 seconds.

Japan’s Yuki Nakayama was not far behind clocking in 7.04 seconds.

Brett White and Kai Ellis Flindt (NSW) advanced in third and fourth places with 6.60 seconds and 6.18 seconds respectively.

Also advancing were Dwayne Paenga (QLD), Jordie Brown (Vic), Jarrad Neal (NSW), Fraser Biden (QLD), Troy Mothershead (USA), Cyrus Sutton (USA), James Parry (UK) and Jared Neal (NSW).

Round 2 of the Smorgasboarder Magazine Old Mal Division was hotly contested, Luke Potter once again topping the scoreboard with an 11.00 heat total (out of 20.00) advancing in first, ahead of Jordie Brown (VIC).

Harrison Roach (QLD) secured a well deserved victory for his traditional style defeating fellow advancing surfer Isaac Fields (NSW).

Mathew Chonjnacki (NSW) proved the last of the division winners, his polished nose-riding earning him the win over second place Kameron Brown (USA).

Today also saw rounds 1 and 2 of the U18 Boys, round 1 of the U15 Boys as well as quarterfinals and semifinals of the U18 girls completed.
