Sydney Regional Champions Crowned on Avalon Beach

Riding their way to victory after a drop in swell and a huge day of competition, Sydney’s best grommets descended on Avalon for the Ocean & Earth Teenage Rampage.

The third instalment of the premier junior surfing series, marks half way in the search for the top grommets to compete at the International Teenage Rampage next January in Cronulla.

Conditions were challenging but contestable and the under 16 boys final came down to the dying seconds when Luca Elda (Bungan Beach) saved his best for last in a nail biting finish.

“The waves were very small, I was lucky when the waves came so I sat on the shallow bank and when the other boys got the first set I kept getting up on the inside just waiting”, said Elder.

“They called 20 seconds and one last wave came, I paddled my heart out for it. I got a couple of hits on it, I had no idea if I won, Connor is won of my best mates and it didn’t matter if I got first or second I was stoked for both of us”, said Elder.

Connor Gale (Avalon), Jackson Giles (Matraville) and Joshua Szele (Warilla) didn’t let the acclaimed title go easily, their top performances in the opening rounds continued through for a nail biting Sydney regional final.

With a solid 40 heats running competitors surfed their way through an epic day, after an early call to proceed through two rounds and finals due to a forecasted drop in swell, the finals ran until dusk.

The girls divisions brought Sydney’s finest grommets to the waves with surfers like Holly Warn (Newport), Veronica Charles (Cronulla) and Manly’s Sophia Bernard ripping it up in the under 16 division.

Sophia Bernard (Manly) stylishly attacked the consistent peaks on Avalon beach, scoring a final result which outshone her competitors in the final to defeat Holly Warn, (Newport), Tori Levett (Manly), and Tiana Reid (Narrabeen), who finished second to fourth respectively.

“My main strategy for the whole event because it was so small was to just keep busy the whole time”, said Bernard.

“It was a fun event, surfing 4 heats in one day in these conditions was really tough, the waves were really inconsistent, but once you get them it was ok”, said Bernard,

Not to be outdone, Alysse Cooper (Allambie Heights) and Luke Wrice (Coledale ) captured victory in the 13 and under Girls and the 13 and under Boys Division respectively. Surfing NSW Events Manager Luke Madden said the Ocean & Earth Teenage Rampage seems to get better every year.

“It’ one of the most enjoyable events on the calendar for young surfers who look forward to competing in the series each year. We continually see rising talent and this event provides a host of fun activities” said Madden.

With Wombat running the Vodafone happy hour, adding Dodge ball and Volleyball to the mix, and the Dash for Cash, there was ample opportunity for great prizes and activities

Adding further incentive to this event, which is one of a dozen international events being staged throughout the year, is that it will act as a qualifying event to the Ocean & Earth International Teenage Rampage.

The top four surfers in the male divisions and under 16 girls and the highest two from the under 13 girls qualify for the Ocean & Earth International Teenage Rampage to be held in January, 2012 at Cronulla.

The Ocean & Earth Teenage Rampage Junior Surfing Series is presented by Vodafone and supported by Surfing NSW.
