Yesterday the Ballina Shire Council voted 7-2 in favour of the recent NSW Government decision to roll on legislation allowing a shark meshing trial in the Shire.

While local thoughts and feelings on the matter remain heated, there’s now nothing to impede the meshing trial. Indeed it’s likely the council will encourage an extension of the meshing beyond the current trial site of Lighthouse/North Wall, where many of the recent spate of attacks have occurred.

How that goes remains to be seen. Meanwhile, the NSW Department of Primary Industry has posted details of the trial on its website: www.dpi.nsw.gov.au/sharks

The page also contains a survey aiming to inform the DPI of public attitudes to, and understanding of, the trials. The Department is holding information drop-in stands at Ballina-Lismore SLSC and Lennox SLSC from 8am to 2pm this Saturday (29/10).

The DPI plans to continue all of the measures already committed to under its local shark mitigation strategy, including an extra 85 smart drumlines and continued use of sonar buoys, shark tagging/tracking, tag-triggered “clever” buoys, aerial surveillance and the SharkSmart app.

We’ll continue to cover this issue as it evolves, and in the meantime, try to uncover some answers to the big question: why Ballina, and why now? Is something drawing great whites to this piece of coastline?
